About this role

The Registered Ob/Gyn sonographer performs clinical imaging duties under the general direction of the physician and supervision of the clinical manager. This role requires competencies in a variety of OB procedures, performing ultrasound examinations in accordance with AIUM and ACOG guidelines.

Day-to-day responsibilities include preparing patients, obtaining appropriate histories, and providing ultrasound guided assistance to physicians during procedures. The sonographer produces quality study images by demonstrating proper use of imaging and accessory equipment, while maintaining accurate record keeping and care of equipment.

The sonographer works closely with leadership to efficiently use department resources and staffing to volumes, scheduling add-on and emergency exams for same-day requests. They maintain proficiency in information systems, including structured reporting and image archival, and follow all infection control policies.

Opportunities for growth include participating in peer review, departmental process improvement activities, and engaging in meetings to share responsibility for the agenda. The role requires maintaining current RDMS registry and CPR certification, with ongoing continuing education to stay compliant with ACR/AIUM standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor or Associates Degree in Ultrasound/Allied Health or graduate from an Accredited Ultrasound training program
  • RDMS Registry in related ultrasound specialty (OB/GYN) required and must maintain minimum continuing education requirements of the registry and ACR/AIUM
  • Minimum of 1 year in high risk or office based OB/GYN ultrasound diagnostics and procedures
  • Competencies in a variety of OB procedures and knowledge of AIUM and ACOG guidelines and protocols
  • Current CPR certification required
  • Proficiency in information systems, including structured reporting and image archival systems
  • Compliance with annual hospital and departmental safety and in-service requirements, including TB testing and flu/Tdap vaccinations

Responsibilities

  • Perform imaging and procedural duties of an Obstetric/Gynecological Sonographer following testing protocols established by the Medical Director and professional standards
  • Produce quality study images and data by demonstrating competence and proper use of imaging and accessory equipment
  • Prepare patients and provide ultrasound guided assistance to the physician during procedures
  • Assess the patient’s physical, psychosocial, and educational needs and obtain an appropriate history prior to each test
  • Maximize services and maintain workflow, performing assignments within established time duration and actively helping others when needed
  • Schedule add-on and emergency exams for same-day requests following good customer service standards
  • Maintain accurate and timely order entry and exam tracking in the HIS, and communicate equipment maintenance needs to the supervisor
  • Participate in peer review and departmental process improvement activities
