About this role

This role involves the evaluation of anatomy and pathophysiology of the cardiac system using diagnostic ultrasound. The echo sonographer performs cardiac or vascular ultrasound procedures on patients of all ages, producing and assessing images to support diagnostic results.

Day-to-day responsibilities include obtaining and reviewing pertinent patient history, physical examination, and supporting clinical data. The sonographer provides interpreting physicians with an oral or written summary of technical findings, ensuring proper documentation and transmission of patient information.

This position is part of the Memorial Health System, where the sonographer embodies performance excellence standards of Safety, Courtesy, Quality, and Efficiency. The role requires learning technical skills related to all ultrasound imaging factors and maintaining knowledge of other testing modalities.

New sonographers have 36 months from date of hire to obtain the proper ARDMS credential, with a focus on successful completion of the registry examination. The role also includes maintaining current CPR certification and demonstrating knowledge in human gross and sectional anatomy.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree in Diagnostic Ultrasound or in the medical field, or graduation from a CAAHEP-accredited diploma program in Diagnostic Ultrasound.
  • Work toward successful completion of the ARDMS registry examination is required; new sonographers have 36 months from date of hire to obtain the proper credential (RDCS for cardiac, RVT for vascular).
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Previous health care setting experience preferred.
  • Ability to lift and move patients and heavy equipment to meet clinical and operational needs.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Data organization and information handling skills.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain, review, and bring together pertinent patient history, physical examination, and supporting clinical data to facilitate diagnostic results.
  • Perform cardiac or vascular ultrasound diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures on patients of all ages by producing, assessing, and evaluating ultrasound images and related data.
  • Provide interpreting physicians and supervising sonographers with an oral or written summary of technical findings.
  • Learn technical skills related to all ultrasound imaging factors and maintain knowledge of other testing modalities.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in human gross and sectional anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology to image and evaluate normal and abnormal tissue structure or function.
  • Learn and understand biological effects of ultrasound.
  • Ensure proper recording, documentation, confidentiality, and transmission of patient information.
  • Monitor the condition of equipment and supplies to ensure safe and efficient operation of the department.
