About this role

This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by performing diagnostic ultrasounds and reporting findings and diagnoses to the radiologist. The sonographer provides quality patient care to women in a dedicated Women's Center environment.

Day-to-day tasks include operating diagnostic equipment to produce high quality sonograms following protocol, reviewing patient medical information from the EMR, and preparing images on PACS for radiologist interpretation. You will also assist nursing and mammography staff as needed and maintain supply inventory.

Mercy is an independent, community-based organization supporting the Cedar Rapids area for over 120 years. This part-time position offers the opportunity to develop expertise in breast imaging and ultrasound procedures within a supportive, patient-focused setting.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited ultrasound educational program required.
  • American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certification required within 18 months of employment; within 6 months for Women's Center.
  • Women's Center: ARDMS breast certification required and abdomen certification preferred.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse / Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required; certification must be submitted to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.
  • One year experience in performing ultrasound procedures preferred.
  • Knowledge of breast MRI and mammograms for Women's Center role.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, families, and co-workers at handoffs to achieve the best possible patient outcome.
  • Operate diagnostic ultrasound equipment to produce high quality sonograms consistently following protocol.
  • Identify each patient and review the patient's radiology worksheet and EMR for medical information needed to perform an accurate exam.
  • Prepare images on PACS correctly prior to radiologist interpretation.
  • Complete all ultrasound exams, procedures, and biopsies in the Women's Center.
  • Assist nursing and mammography staff as needed when time allows.
  • Maintain supply inventory and ensure the department is clean and all ancillary equipment is running properly.
  • Follow Mercy's safety guidelines and promptly report any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents, or injuries.
