About this role
Under the direction of a radiologist, the MRI Technologist maintains the daily function of the MRI department with minimal supervision. This role is responsible for initiating correct scanning protocols and ensuring patient safety throughout the imaging process.
Day-to-day duties include checking MRI consults and prescriptions, preparing patients for exams, and reviewing screening forms to identify contraindications. The technologist researches biomedical implant compatibility, documents findings in Epic, and coordinates with the radiologist on any discrepancies between the ordered exam and patient history.
Working closely with radiologists and attending physicians, the technologist communicates with a diverse patient population including pediatric, geriatric, and psychiatric patients. They advise patients on examination procedures, means of communication during scanning, and the necessity of intravenous contrast injections.
This role offers the opportunity to work independently while collaborating with a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced medical imaging environment. The technologist contributes to high-quality patient care and accurate diagnostic imaging.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent with completion of a 2-year Radiology Technology Training program from a JRCERT approved program.
- Additional training or experience in the field of MRI Technology.
- ARRT(R) or ARRT(MR) certification required.
- ARRT(R)(MR) certification preferred.
- Minimum of two years MRI scanning experience preferred.
Responsibilities
- Initiate correct protocol for scanning requested anatomy with minimal supervision.
- Check MRI consult/prescription and provisional diagnosis for relevant patient history.
- Prepare patient for exam by explaining the procedure and changing into hospital gown as needed.
- Review patient screening form and investigate contraindications to ensure candidacy for MRI.
- Research MRI compatibility of biomedical implants, document findings in Epic under the implant tab.
- Advise patient on examination procedure and means of communication during scan, including emergency squeeze ball.
- Transfer patient safely to scanner table using non-magnetic chair or stretcher and prepare for IV injection if needed.
