About this role

Utilizing high frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques to produce and evaluate ultrasound images and related data used by physicians to render medical diagnosis. He or she can perform all duties of radiographer I if registered with the American College of Radiology (ARRT) as required. Maintains own clinical competency in Ultrasound and Radiography if registered both modalities.

Maintains utmost level of confidentiality, adheres to hospital policies and procedures, and demonstrates ethical business practices. Accurately enters patient demographics, selects appropriate transducer, and sets initial power output and gain for patient size and age. Recognizes differences in normal and abnormal tissue structures and obtains pertinent patient history.

Provides basic patient care and comfort with good infection control practices including hand washing and standard precautions. Transfers images to hard copy or PACS system and consistently provides best images possible within limitations. Assists in cyst aspiration, fluid aspiration, biopsy procedures, and maintains clinical records.

Recognizes examination findings requiring immediate clinical response and notifies interpreting physician. Assists in developing ultrasound procedure manual and maintaining ACR certification compliance. Employs professional judgment to protect patient rights and perform within scope of practice.

Requirements

  • Maintains own clinical competency in Ultrasound and Radiography if registered both modalities
  • Performs all duties of radiographer I if registered with ARRT
  • Recognizes examination findings that may require an immediate clinical response
  • Provides basic patient care and comfort including good infection control practices
  • Uses oral and written communication skills to interact with interpreting physician
  • Identifies life threatening situations and responds appropriately
  • Documents equipment performance service, maintenance and configuration changes

  • Extends standard imaging protocols as required by patient history or initial sonographic findings
  • Transfers images to hard copy or to PACS system as appropriate
  • Assists in cyst aspiration, fluid aspiration and biopsy procedures
