About this role

The Sonographer produces diagnostic images of organs and structures of the human body through high frequency sound waves. Ultrasound is an extremely operator dependent imaging modality requiring an advanced understanding of anatomy and vascular physiology to assist in diagnosis and treatment.

Daily responsibilities include performing biopsies and interventional ultrasound procedures while rotating weekends and on-call duties with a 45-minute response requirement. The role involves explaining procedures, reviewing patient histories, and operating complex equipment with appropriate technical factors.

University of Cincinnati Medical Center serves as Greater Cincinnati’s academic health system and only Level I adult trauma center. Clinicians deliver advanced specialty care supported by ongoing research that connects patients to new therapies and protocols.

Staff participate in continuing education activities, maintain skills for geriatric and neonatal patients, instruct students in ultrasound methods, and contribute to quality control and equipment testing programs.

Requirements

  • Advanced understanding of anatomy and vascular physiology
  • Ability to respond within 45 minutes for call procedures
  • Skill in recognizing and responding appropriately to patients with behavioral health problems or signs of abuse
  • Proficiency in administering or assisting with CPR and other emergency procedures
  • Ability to demonstrate and maintain skills for care of geriatric and neonatal patients

Responsibilities

  • Performs biopsies and other interventional ultrasound procedures
  • Performs diagnostic ultrasound procedures in accordance with established protocols
  • Selects and operates complex ultrasound equipment while regulating technical factors on individual patients
  • Explains procedures to patients and gives clear instructions to patients and families regarding treatment
  • Maintains appropriate records and supplies and practices aseptic and sterile technique
  • Instructs students in methods and procedures
  • Participates in continuing education activities related to diagnostic ultrasound and its subspecialties
  • Performs evaluative equipment tests and participates in quality control programs
