About this role

ICAP at Columbia University, a global health leader within the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, seeks a highly qualified Sonographer to be based in Freetown. This role supports the rollout of new ultrasound systems under the MedEd Imaging Initiative, a flagship collaboration between the Ministry of Health and ICAP.

The Sonographer will report to the MoH Radiologist and ICAP Technical Lead, contributing to capacity-building and clinical training. The project deploys CT scanners, ultrasound machines, and a digital cadaver lab, accompanied by infrastructure renovations and staff training at key hospitals.

Working within a dynamic global health team, the Sonographer will help transform medical education and diagnostic services in Sierra Leone. This position is grant funded and offers the opportunity to make a lasting impact on healthcare delivery.

This role provides a unique chance to advance diagnostic imaging capabilities in a resource-limited setting while collaborating with international and local health experts. The successful candidate will play a key part in strengthening the local healthcare workforce.

Requirements

  • At least a BSc in Medical Sonography, Medical Imaging, or related field
  • At least 8 years’ experience performing diagnostic ultrasound in a clinical setting
  • Experience in training or capacity-building in a healthcare setting
  • Ability to work in a resource-limited environment
  • Strong clinical skills in diagnostic ultrasound

Responsibilities

  • Support the rollout of new ultrasound systems
  • Contribute to capacity-building and clinical training under the MedEd project
  • Perform diagnostic ultrasound examinations in a clinical setting
  • Collaborate with the MoH Radiologist and ICAP Technical Lead on imaging initiatives
  • Assist in training hospital staff on ultrasound equipment and procedures
  • Help maintain and ensure proper functioning of ultrasound machines
