
About this role
This role is responsible for performing all sonography imaging procedures independently or under the supervision of a senior sonographer. The sonographer analyzes output and reports findings to the supervisor as needed, ensuring high diagnostic quality in every study.
Day-to-day duties include applying detailed knowledge of anatomy and physiology to produce images of high diagnostic quality, evaluating ultrasound images for acceptable quality and completeness, and forwarding images to the radiologist for review and reporting. The sonographer also recognizes anatomy and pathology in cross-sectional imaging to optimize scan protocols and liaises with radiologists to arrange further imaging or tests.
The sonographer works within a collaborative medical team, providing advice to medical and technical staff on appropriate techniques and imaging interventions. They maintain a clean and tidy working environment, restock supplies, and ensure the safe and competent use of all radiology equipment, reporting any incidents or equipment faults in a timely manner.
This position offers opportunities for professional growth through participation in education sessions, orientation and training of new employees and radiography interns, and attending lectures, seminars, or online education units. The sonographer also contributes to quality improvement measures and supports clinical audit processes within the service.
Requirements
- Minimum 2 years post-graduate experience in ultrasound in an acute care setting
- Special certificate in sonography or related field
- Detailed knowledge of anatomy and physiology to produce images of high diagnostic quality
- Ability to evaluate and assess ultrasound images for acceptable quality and completeness
- Competence in recognizing anatomy and pathology in cross-sectional imaging
- Proficiency in maintaining standard operating procedures and quality assurance tests
- Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with patients, family, and medical personnel
Responsibilities
- Perform all ultrasound imaging procedures in accordance with department policies, procedures, and protocols
- Evaluate and assess ultrasound images for acceptable quality, appropriateness, and completeness
- Forward images to the radiologist for review and reporting
- Recognize anatomy and pathology in cross-sectional imaging to optimize scan protocols and liaise with radiologists for further imaging or tests
- Maintain sufficient inventory of material supplies and equipment, reporting shortages to supervisor
- Ensure the safe and competent use of all radiology equipment, reporting incidents and equipment faults in a timely manner
- Participate in the orientation and training of new employees and radiography interns
- Comply with all safety and quality control programs and procedures, including infection control and environmental safety precautions
