The Perinatal Sonographer participates in patient care under direct physician supervision and in collaboration with the healthcare team. This role involves performing various fetal examinations, assisting in invasive procedures, and reporting sonographic results. The ideal candidate specializes in high-risk obstetric imaging and ensures patient safety and comfort during ultrasound procedures.

Daily responsibilities include conducting fetal exams such as 1st trimester ultrasound, nuchal translucency measurement, 2nd trimester basic and detailed anatomic surveys, 3rd trimester ultrasound, and limited examinations. Sonographers acquire and analyze data using ultrasound technologies, verify physician orders, and interview patients for pertinent history. They use independent judgment to produce high-quality diagnostic information and optimize patient care.

This full-time position offers a 4-day work week to promote work-life balance in a family-focused environment. Sonographers work alongside perinatologists and healthcare professionals, greeting patients compassionately, explaining procedures, and preparing them according to department policies. They manage daily operations of the sonographic laboratory, equipment performance, and clinical quality assessment.

Requirements

  • Specialization in high-risk obstetric imaging
  • Proficiency in performing fetal ultrasound examinations across all trimesters
  • Ability to measure nuchal translucency and conduct detailed anatomic surveys
  • Knowledge of AIUM examination guidelines and Maternal-Fetal Medicine protocols
  • Skill in assisting with invasive procedures under physician supervision
  • Competence in ensuring patient safety, comfort, and compassionate support
  • Experience managing sonographic laboratory operations and equipment performance
  • Adherence to Howard University FPP Privacy Policy and applicable healthcare laws

Responsibilities

  • Perform all requested sonographic examinations as ordered by the attending physician
  • Acquire and analyze data obtained using ultrasound and related diagnostic technologies
  • Meet examination components as defined by Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division, department procedures, established protocols, and AIUM’s examination guidelines
  • Greet patients and guests, explain ultrasound procedures, and prepare patients for appropriate examination according to department policies
  • Verify accuracy of ultrasound requisition by checking physician’s orders in the patient’s medical record
  • Interview patients to gather history pertinent to the ultrasound examination
  • Use independent judgment and systematic problem-solving methods to produce high quality diagnostic information and optimize patient care
  • Conduct fetal exams including 1st trimester ultrasound, nuchal translucency measurement, 2nd trimester basic and detailed anatomic survey, 3rd trimester ultrasound, and limited examinations
