About this role
The Cath Lab Technician assists physicians during cardiac catheterization and interventional procedures to diagnose and treat cardiovascular conditions. This role prepares and maintains equipment, monitors patients, and ensures the highest standards of patient care and safety. The technician plays a key role in supporting the efficiency and effectiveness of the cardiac catheterization laboratory.
In the lab, the technician prepares the room, operates specialized equipment such as fluoroscopy machines and IVUS, and monitors vital signs. They also prepare patients by positioning and explaining procedures to alleviate anxiety while ensuring accurate documentation of procedures and patient data for compliance.
The technician collaborates closely with physicians and the clinical team to ensure smooth procedure flow and patient safety. They adhere to radiation safety protocols and infection control guidelines, maintaining a safe environment. This role requires focus in a fast-paced setting where quick response to emergencies is critical.
The technician participates in quality improvement activities and helps maintain accreditation standards for the Cath Lab. This involvement offers opportunities to contribute to best practices and advance skills in cardiovascular diagnostics. Routine equipment maintenance and troubleshooting further develop technical expertise.
Requirements
- 1-2 years of experience in a Cardiac Cath Lab or cardiovascular diagnostic setting.
- Proficiency in cardiovascular diagnostic and interventional procedures, equipment use, and patient monitoring.
- Proficient understanding of cardiac anatomy, physiology, and related medical terminology.
- Ability to maintain focus in a fast-paced environment and respond quickly to emergencies.
- Certification as a Cardiovascular Tech (CVT), Certified Radiologic Technologist (CRT), or Registered Nurse (RN) with state licensure.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within the first 30 days of employment.
- Active and unencumbered Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) or equivalent certification (Arkansas-specific requirement).
Responsibilities
- Prepare the cardiac catheterization laboratory for procedures, ensuring equipment and supplies are available and functioning properly.
- Assist physicians during procedures by operating specialized equipment like fluoroscopy machines, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), or hemodynamic monitoring systems.
- Monitor patients' vital signs during procedures, documenting data and promptly reporting any abnormalities to the physician or clinical team.
- Prepare patients by positioning, draping, and explaining the process to alleviate anxiety and ensure compliance.
- Ensure accurate and complete documentation of procedures, patient data, and equipment usage in compliance with departmental policies.
- Adhere to radiation safety protocols and infection control guidelines to ensure patient and staff safety.
- Assist in the administration of contrast media and medications under the direction of the physician.
- Participate in quality improvement activities and assist in maintaining accreditation standards for the Cath Lab.
