About this role
Cardiac sonographers provide professional, safe and compassionate ultrasound imaging care to all patient populations. They are uniquely trained in the advanced understanding of ultrasound physics and instrumentation to optimize ultrasound controls for the highest quality image acquisition. They identify and evaluate appropriate anatomical and physiological consequences consistent with disease processes.
Obtain patient history and perform pre-ultrasound procedure assessments to verify exam consistency with history, indication and diagnosis. Clarify inconsistencies with ordering physician and communicate with patients to explain procedures and elicit cooperation. Assume responsibility for patient safety, mental and physical comfort during care.
Perform routine and complex cardiac ultrasound procedures including echocardiograms, stress echocardiograms with treadmill, Dobutamine or bicycle ergonometry. Assist physicians in TEE exams by acquiring images from the esophagus and completing probe cleaning at KU location. Provide on-call echocardiographic services for emergent needs under cardiologist direction.
Adapt routine protocols to wide range of patients and disease-state variability, making each exam unique. Demonstrate cognitive and psychomotor skills to obtain echocardiographic images and hemodynamic information. Organize data for interpreting physicians, identify critical values and participate in departmental QI program with peer feedback.
